A new doctor and a Dean’s commendation

The ISB lab is over the moon to announce our newest PhD completion: soon-to-be Dr Alana McClelland.

In June of 2025, Alana submitted her PhD thesis titled: “Phylogenetics and species delimitation of the Australian Psyllaephagus, important but problematic parasitoids of lerp-forming psyllids.”

It was promptly accepted with only minor revisions, and glowing reviews.

Alana undertook her PhD in the Invertebrate Systematics and Biodiversity Lab at The University of Adelaide. Pictured (left to right): Dr Perry Beasley-Hall, Dr Danielle Stringer, Dr Brock Hedges, Dr Erinn Fagan-Jeffries, Dr Alana McClelland and Dr Michelle Guzik.

Her research explores the identities of, and relationships between, species of Psyllaephagus wasps, a genus of microscopic insects that parasitise sap-sucking bugs known as psyllids. Her research findings are expected to improve the efficacy of biocontrol programs that seek to control these often harmful forestry pests.

What’s more, in recognition of the novelty, and exceptionally high quality of her research, Alana was awarded a Dean’s commendation by The University of Adelaide.

The Psyllaephagus wasps that Alana studied during her PhD are parasitoids of lerp-forming psyllids.

Congratulations to Alana, as well as all the other fantastic scientists that contributed to her thesis.
